HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston transit bus hit a pickup truck and slammed into an overhead highway sign, injuring 32 people, one significantly, and sending 28 people to hospitals.

The crash happened about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on the eastern edge of downtown Houston on Runnels Street at Eastex Freeway (U.S. 59/Interstate 69), near Minute Maid Park. Witnesses say a pickup truck pulled in front of the bus as it was entering a northbound entrance ramp to the freeway. The bus hit the truck, then slammed into an overhead sign standard.

A police statement says the bus driver was pinned into his seat and had to be extricated by rescue crews. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Twenty-eight other people were taken to hospitals for evaluation.
