MAYWOOD, Ill. (AP) - A former Illinois state trooper convicted of killing his girlfriend has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Prosecutors say 35-year-old Brian Himber of Chicago was sentenced Wednesday for the shooting death of 29-year-old Tracy Mays of Joliet in July 2012. He was convicted of first-degree murder in January. He must serve all of his sentence.

Prosecutors say a few hours after arriving at a graduation party in Westchester, the off-duty trooper fired a .380 caliber handgun and struck Mays several times as she sat on a porch. She later died at a hospital. Himber also shot himself once in the chin but has since recovered from that injury.
