The Delta County Republican Central Committee in Colorado has blamed hackers for a racist meme posted on an official’s Facebook page, even though the official previously said it was intended to be a joke.

The meme, allegedly shared last week by committee chairwoman Linda Sorenson, featured a scene from the 1951 comedy “Bedtime for Bonzo” showing late President Ronald Reagan bottle-feeding a chimp. The accompanying text said, “I’ll be damned … Reagan used to babysit Obama!” The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported.

Vic Ullrey, vice chairman of the committee, said Ms. Sorenson’s Facebook page was accessed by someone else.

Her page remained offline by press time Wednesday.

“This whole thing is a hoax. Someone got into the Facebook somehow,” Mr. Ullrey told The Sentinel. “It was hacked and somebody got into it, definitely.”

He insisted Ms. Sorenson is “absolutely not” racist and speculated that she was targeted in an effort to embarrass the GOP.

“Just to damage the Republican Party, no doubt,” he said. “Just to make us look bad.”

Sue Whittlesey, committee treasurer, similarly told The Sentinel: “That whole thing is bogus. Somebody hacked Linda Sorenson’s Facebook page, and posted that out there.”

She guessed that it had something to do with Media Matters for America, a liberal watchdog group.

“They’ve been harassing her the last few weeks,” Ms. Whittlesey said.

Ms. Sorenson, however, told Bigmedia.org’s Jason Salzman last week that the meme was a joke.

“I really don’t care if people are offended by it,” she reportedly said. “Un-friend me. Stop looking at me on Facebook.”

Ms. Sorenson has not commented on the issue since.

She has reportedly been chairwoman of the central committee for about four years.
