VALLEY, Ala. (AP) - Authorities have recovered the body of an 18-year-old man who went missing in the Chattahoochee River while he was swimming with friends.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources said in a news release that Gabriel West of Lanett was swimming with two friends near Valley on Monday night when he was swept away by strong currents.

Authorities say West had been jumping from a dam at the Riverview public access area.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources spotted the teenager’s body on Tuesday morning and pulled it from the river nearly a mile from the dam.
