WAWAYANDA, N.Y. (AP) - Police say two women and a 9-year-old girl have died after a tractor-trailer slammed into a car that had run out of gas on Interstate 84 in southeastern New York.

State police Capt. Brendan Casey says a 911 operator who was talking to the driver heard the crash at 3:40 Wednesday in the town of Wawayanda (way-way-AHN’-dah), 60 miles northwest of New York City.

Killed were the driver, 29-year-old Jesenia Valentin of Bridgeport, Connecticut, her daughter, and a woman passenger whose name wasn’t released. Two dogs in the car also died.

Casey said Valentin’s Volkswagen Passat was stopped in the right-hand driving lane with its flashers on when it was struck by a Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by 52-year-old Gino Ruggiero of Sugar Loaf, Pennsylvania. He wasn’t injured.
