TROY, N.Y. (AP) - A 20-year-old man has been convicted of manslaughter but acquitted of a murder charge in the slaying of his pregnant ex-girlfriend in her upstate New York apartment.

A Rensselaer County Court jury opted Wednesday to convict Gabriel Vega of the lesser charge after four days of deliberations. He was also found guilty of abortion for causing the death of 19-year-old Vanessa Milligan’s unborn child and arson for torching her Troy apartment after strangling her in April 2014.

Authorities say he poured gasoline over her body and started a blaze that destroyed the building. The Record of Troy reports (https://bit.ly/1TJYE5W ) that Milligan shared the apartment with her grandmother, who died earlier that day after battling cancer.

Vega faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison when he’s sentenced July 14.
