SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) - Police say a 7-year-old boy who was shot in the face at a northern Ohio home told authorities his uncle shot him.

Sandusky police initially thought the boy accidentally hurt himself while playing with a gun, because that’s what the uncle said when he called 911 for help Sunday afternoon.

But investigators say the boy later said the uncle was responsible for what happened. It’s not clear whether the shooting was accidental.

WJW-TV reports the uncle was arrested early Wednesday morning. The Sandusky Register reports he initially faces a child endangerment charge.

The boy was shot in the cheek area and was flown to a hospital for treatment in an intensive care unit but is expected to recover.

It’s unclear who owns the gun.
