THOMPSON FALLS, Mont. (AP) - A Sanders County jury has convicted a Plains man of negligent homicide in the April 2014 death of his 3-month-old son.

The Missoulian reports (https://bit.ly/28344CJ ) District Judge James Manley scheduled Gunner Dye’s sentencing for Aug. 23.

Dye told authorities that he was feeding his son, Shane, when the baby appeared to choke on his bottle.

The boy’s mother and grandmother told authorities they did not believe Dye would hurt the baby and a friend who had been at Dye’s residence 30 minutes before the boy went limp says the baby appeared happy and smiling.

A medical examiner testified the infant died of head and neck injuries consistent with having been shaken.

The jury returned its verdict on Saturday, after a weeklong trial in Thompson Falls.
