ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of a deputy who collapsed on duty.

Sheriff William Earl Hilton tells KATC-TV (https://bit.ly/1TYuP50 ) 43-year-old Cpl. Robert Johnson died Wednesday.

Hilton says Johnson was loading his patrol unit, getting ready to go on patrol when he collapsed in the substation’s parking lot. A motorist saw Johnson and notified deputies inside.

The deputies and the motorist immediately started CPR and called for an ambulance, which took him to Rapides Regional Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead. Hilton says the cause of death is unknown but it appears to be heart related.

Johnson, a school resource officer at Ruby Wise Elementary, had been with the sheriff’s office since Jan. 1, 1995.

Survivors include his wife, Tanya, and three daughters. Funeral arrangements are pending.
