CHAMPION, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 44-year-old woman has died after she was hit by a vehicle while walking on a road near her northern New York home.

Troopers say a woman was driving on Route 3 in the Jefferson County town of Champion while headed to work late Tuesday night when she came upon a woman walking in the middle of the eastbound lane.

Police say the driver didn’t have time to evade the pedestrian and struck her. Troopers on Wednesday morning identified the pedestrian as Tina Hewitt of West Carthage. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers say she was walking home along a stretch of road with no street lights.

Police say the driver isn’t facing charges.
