CLEVELAND (AP) - A Cleveland man has been sentenced to life in prison for hitting his girlfriend so hard that it led to her death.

Cleveland.com reports (https://bit.ly/1UGLclC ) that Carlton Springer was convicted last month of murder, felonious assault, manslaughter and assault in the September death of 34-year-old Theresa Adair.

Springer struck Adair across the head during a fight. She was taken to a hospital, where she died three days later.

Authorities say Springer went into hiding and was arrested by federal marshals in October.

Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) Common Pleas Judge Janet Burnside sentenced Springer on Thursday. He will be eligible for parole after 15 years.

At the sentencing, Springer apologized to Adair’s family and says it was accidental.

Burnside said it wasn’t an ordinary slap or strike, but was “something of grave consequences.”
