BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) - Police say a man used his 5-year-old son as a shield during a confrontation at a Beatrice apartment complex.

Thirty-four-year-old Eric Nicholson is being held in Gage County on charges of child abuse and resisting arrest. Jail records say Nicholson remained in custody Friday. His attorney didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

Police say officers serving Jefferson County arrest warrants told Nicholson their intentions when they saw him through a screen door at the apartment on Saturday. They say he turned and ran upstairs, grabbing the boy to shield himself from the officers, who had threatened to use a stun gun.

The officers say they followed Nicholson upstairs and soon took him into custody. They say the boy was not injured.
