SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) - A 45-year-old ex-convict has admitted strangling a woman and clubbing a man with a shovel before burying them under junk in an apartment house basement.

Harold Ortiz pleaded guilty Monday to killing 55-year-old Valerie Washington and attacking 65-year-old Ralph Carson last September on Union Street in Schenectady. Carson survived after three days lying 10 feet from Washington’s decomposing body.

Ortiz was released from state prison on July 10 after serving 17 years for an attempted murder in Brooklyn, according to state records.

Ortiz pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, kidnapping, grand larceny and possessing stolen property. He’ll be sentenced Aug. 15.
