LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina troopers say a 7-year-old boy has been struck by a box truck and killed while riding an electric scooter.

The Highway Patrol said the boy turned the scooter into the road near Lancaster from a private drive around 6:20 p.m. Monday and was hit by the 2013 Freightliner box truck.

Authorities say Nija Tinsley Jr. died a short time later at the hospital. Investigators say he was not wearing a helmet.
