BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) - A Chinese businessman has completed his takeover of Aston Villa after the purchase was approved by England’s soccer authorities.

Xia Jiantong, who goes by the English name Tony, has taken 100 percent ownership of a club that was relegated from the Premier League last season.

Villa said Tuesday that Xia “has been informed he passed the owners and directors test and following the completion of paperwork today is now the club’s new owner and chairman.”

Xia, whose Recon Group owns the controlling interest in five publicly listed companies on the stock exchanges in Hong Kong and China, told The Associated Press last month that he bought Villa for $87 million.
