PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Providence jury has awarded nearly $1.4 million to the family of a 17-year-old boy who was killed after a car he was riding in was slammed by that of a suspect being pursued by police.

The Providence Journal reported (https://bit.ly/24Nxss9 ) on Monday that a jury found Patrolman David Moscarelli was reckless when he pursued two suspects and that his recklessness led to the April 2007 death of Randy Cabral.

Cabral’s estate had filed a wrongful death suit against the city, officers and Angelo Caba, the suspect whose car hit the vehicle carrying Cabral. Caba served prison time for the crash.

The jury also held the city and Caba responsible in the crash, but cleared two other involved officers.

The officers’ lawyer says he plans to seek a new trial.
