LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - A Lowell man convicted of attacking his girlfriend and their 11-year-old son multiple times is headed to prison.

District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office said Monday that 46-year-old Kirk Austin was sentenced in Middlesex County Superior Court to six to eight years in state prison.

A jury convicted Austin of charges including assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon on a child under the age of 14.

Ryan’s office says Austin’s girlfriend told police that he beat her in front of their son after she asked him to leave her home on July 20, 2015. Authorities say he has beaten their son with a cable cord. They say the assaults happened during the course of their 17-year relationship.
