Televangelist Pat Robertson on Tuesday said conservatives should “sit on the sidelines” and let progressives “kill themselves” over the “dilemma” between Islam and gay rights.

“So the left is having a dilemma of major proportions,” Mr. Robertson said on the “700 Club.” “I think for those of us who disagree with some of their policies, the best thing to do is to sit on the sidelines and let them kill themselves.”

“We’re looking at a favored group by the left, the homosexuals, and that in Islam is punishable by death or imprisonment or some sanction, so what are the left going to do?” he said.

The comments come days after the shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, in which an assailant who pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State claimed the lives of 49 and wounded 53.

Mr. Robertson denounced President Obama and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for refusing to attribute the massacre to radical Islam.

“It is deeply ingrained in the people, and when our president refuses to acknowledge it, when the secretary of state, now our Democratic nominee for president, refuses to acknowledge and says that this is a slur against a great religion, this is nonsense,” he said. “This is what this great religion teaches.”

Mr. Robertson, who unsuccessfully ran for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in 1988, said presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump is “riding high because he said we should screen these people, and he’s absolutely right.”

“So the left is saying, ‘Oh, you’re anti-Muslim, you’re racist’ and all this,” he said. “Suddenly, that part of the narrative doesn’t play too well and they’re stuck as to what to do. But Trump is enjoying a victory.”
