EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah (AP) - Investigators have identified the Utah man who was shot and killed by a deputy while holding a 17-year-old girl at knifepoint.

According to Utah County Sheriff’s Office, 23-year-old Daniel Edwards of Eagle Mountain was shot Sunday night after announcing that he would kill his niece following a 60-second countdown. The girl, who had been staying in his home, was not injured.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon says Edwards’ wife called 911 to say her husband was suicidal and holding their niece hostage. Edwards’ wife and two young children were outside the home when police arrived.

Cannon says the decision was necessary to protect the teenage girl’s life.

Edwards has no criminal history. Investigators did not say what may have led him to hold the girl hostage and threaten to kill her.
