ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - A proposal to give 5 percent pay raises to all Civil Service employees of the Rapides Parish Police Jury has been rejected, but the issue is expected to be revived at some point.

The Town Talk reports (https://townta.lk/1OnbzOp) the police jury on Monday voted 5-3 with one abstention to reject 5 percent pay increases that would take effect July 1.

Richard Billings offered the motion for the pay hikes, saying the parish can afford the approximately $15,600 a year extra that the raises would cost.

The Police Jury is nearing the middle of its fiscal year, which corresponds to the calendar year.

Juror Theodore Fountaine Jr. says the jury should stay within the budget for a change.
