SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - The 16-year-old boy charged with sexual assault and murder in the death of an 8-year-old neighbor girl has pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Adrian Gonzalez will be tried as an adult. He was 15 years old at the time of Maddy Middleton’s murder in Santa Cruz. His trial was set for Feb. 21.

KRON reports (https://bit.ly/1YpenMG ) that about a dozen of the girl’s relatives attended Tuesday’s arraignment and watched as Gonzalez, dressed in a dark green shirt and khaki pants, entered his plea.

Gonzalez is charged with killing Middleton on July 26 at the Tannery Arts Center’s housing complex, where they both lived with their families. Her body was found the next day in a recycling bin in a complex parking garage.

If convicted, Gonzalez could face life in prison.
