MINOT, N.D. (AP) - A Ward County man accused of strangling his wife’s dog is facing a felony animal cruelty charge.

Sixty-three-year-old Darnell Hankel is accused of killing the 11-year-old miniature dachshund in April 2014. Authorities say his wife didn’t report it until last fall.

Hankel made his initial court appearance in Minot on Monday but did not enter a plea. He could do so at a July 21 hearing.

He faces up to five years in prison if convicted. The Associated Press requested comment Tuesday from his attorney.
