HOPKINS, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol says it’s arrested a suspect in the death of a 3-year-old Richland County boy who was struck and killed as he played in a driveway on his birthday.

Lance Cpl. David Jones told local media outlets that 36-year-old Corey Kitt of Hopkins was arrested in the Irmo area around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Kitt is charged with hit and run, driving under suspension and being a habitual traffic offender.

Coroner Gary Watts said Kevin H. Kitt, Jr. was taken to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital after he was struck Monday in Hopkins and he died later that day.

Family members say Kitt is the uncle of the boy who died. A 1-year-old child suffered minor injuries.

It was not clear if Kitt has an attorney yet.
