PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Police are looking into the possibility that a missing Scarborough man fell into Portland Harbor.

Police say dogs tracking the scent of 23-year-old Matthew Foster led officers from an area near the bar where he was last seen to Chandler’s Wharf.

Divers were checking out the area Wednesday evening.

The Portland Press Herald reported that a police spokesman, Lt. James Sweatt, declined to characterize the search as a recovery effort. Sweatt said police are still hopeful that Foster will be found alive.

Foster was last seen Friday near the Oasis nightclub on Wharf Street. He failed to meet up with friends later that night, and he was reported missing on Monday.
