PITTSBURGH (AP) - The new boyfriend of a western Pennsylvania woman has been convicted of voluntary manslaughter for killing her ex-boyfriend.

Allegheny County Judge Thomas Flaherty convicted 29-year-old Jesse Jones on Wednesday and set sentencing for Sept. 16.

A defense attorney argued Jones acted in self-defense when he shot 32-year-old Cameron Johnson in a housing complex in Moon Township on Sept. 23.

The judge acknowledged that Johnson had sent the defendant threatening text messages, but says Jones wasn’t facing deadly force when Johnson drove up to confront Jones while he was with the woman.

Johnson was getting out of his car when he was shot, got back in, then crashed into a tree before he died.

Jones remains jailed pending sentencing.

Jones was also convicted of a firearms violation and tampering with evidence.
