NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Two 16-year-old boys being held in jail on armed robbery charges have briefly escaped from custody.

Charleston County deputies said in a statement that the teens were free for about six hours Wednesday after breaking a window, peeling back a protective screen and using a bed sheet to climb down.

Authorities say the two teens shared a cell at the juvenile annex at the Charleston County jail.

Deputies say officers took the teens back into custody after they were spotted walking on a street about 14 miles away from the jail.

The sheriff’s office says a supervisor and a guard have been placed on leave with pay while the escape is investigated further.
