NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City police officer severely wounded in a brazen daylight hatchet attack has received the NYPD’s highest honor.

Officer Kenneth Healey received the Medal of Honor Tuesday at the department’s yearly Medal Day Ceremony in Manhattan.

Healey and three other officers were patrolling a bustling Queens commercial district in October 2014 when a man charged them with an 18-inch hatchet. Healey was gashed in the head and Officer Joseph Meeker was wounded in the arm.

Police shot and killed the suspect, who had previously ranted against America online.

Healey needed numerous surgeries after suffering a shattered skull. He returned to the force more than a year later.

More than 50 current and former officers received awards. Meeker was awarded the Medal for Valor.
