BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A federal grand jury has indicted an Orwell, Vermont, photographer on charges of possessing child pornography.

John Penwarden pleaded not guilty to the charges on Tuesday.

An Addison County affidavit from May of 2015 says law enforcement searched Penwarden’s home after reports from a 13-year-old girl that he had committed repeated sexual contact offenses with her starting when she was eight or nine years old, including taking pornographic photos of her.

Court records say investigators found 76 sexually explicit images of both male and female children, of which 50 appeared to be sexually explicit depictions of the girl.

Penwarden’s lawyer did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment after hours.

If convicted, Penwarden faces up to 20 years in prison.
