GAINES, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a 17-year-old bicyclist from western New York drowned after he rode off an Erie Canal tow path in the dark.

The Orleans County Sheriff’s office says Wednesday that Raymond Kingdollar of Barre left the village of Albion at about 10 p.m. Thursday to ride to his girlfriend’s house.

Deputies say his body was found Monday in the canal in the town of Gaines, 32 miles northwest of Rochester.

They say people who knew Kingdollar told investigators he didn’t know how to swim.
