Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama charged Thursday that the American Muslim community would “kill every homosexual” in the U.S. “if it had its way.”

Mr. Brooks said during an interview on the “Matt & Aunie” radio show in Birmingham that “there are provisions in the Koran” instructing Muslims “to kill certain types of people, and homosexuals are right up there at the top,” BuzzFeed News reported.

His comments come just days after a Muslim terrorist, who pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State, killed 49 people and injured 53 others at a gay nightclub in Orlando. Conservatives have tried to focus the blame on Islamic terrorism, while Democrats and activists blamed semi-automatic rifles and anti-discrimination laws supported by the Christian right.

Mr. Brooks said the left’s efforts are more about votes than keeping the public safe, AL.com reported.

“Well, it’s probably because [Democrats are] counting votes,” he said when asked about specific gun control provisions. “They’re seeking a block vote from the Muslim community in the United States and that’s a community that’s increasing in political power, as it’s doing in Europe. More and more votes are there. And the Democrats are in a perplexing position. On the one hand, they’re trying to appeal to the gay community, but, on the other hand, they’re trying to also appeal to the Muslim community, which, if it had its way, would kill every homosexual in the United States of America.

“Democrats have to do that in order to divert attention from the real cause, the real motivation that prompts these people to go on these killing sprees and it’s the principals that are taught by Islam and the Democrats can’t handle that,” he added.
