BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - Authorities say an inmate who escaped from a police transport van along the West Virginia Turnpike and then allegedly stole a car has been captured.

According to media reports, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says 37-year-old Paul Ira Hopkins was arrested at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday after someone saw him at a gas station and called authorities.

Officials say Hopkins was handcuffed and wearing ankle shackles when he got the van’s door open and jumped over a guardrail Wednesday. Officials say he then stole a car.

Hopkins will be taken back to jail, where he will begin serving his original six-month sentence for petit larceny and fleeing from an officer. He will also face additional charges from his escape.
