LAKE STEVENS, Wash. (AP) - Medical investigators have identified a Marysville man fatally shot by a police officer and deputy after an hours-long standoff near Lake Stevens.

The Seattle Times reports (https://goo.gl/kD2J7e ) 29-year-old Nathan Q. Cates died of multiple gunshot wounds on May 7.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s office says his manner of death was homicide.

Police say they negotiated with Cates, who was reportedly suicidal, and say they tried several “less lethal” methods to subdue him including spraying him with water from a fire house.

Believing he had put down his gun, officers approached and say they fired when Cates “made a movement to the gun.”

A Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy and an Everett police officer fired at the man. Their names have not been released.
