GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - People have gathered for a gay pride event in western Michigan a week after the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Florida.

WZZM-TV reports (https://on.wzzm.com/269SQdx) people marched Saturday as part of the 28th annual Grand Rapids Pride Festival. The festivities also feature a strong security presence, with police patrolling by car, bike and on foot, and enforcing a clear bag policy to keep suspicious items out of the street fair.

Festivals and parades went ahead under increased security in many other cities, such as Chicago, Columbus, Ohio; and Providence, Rhode Island, a week after a gunman fired on a crowd at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The attack left 49 people dead.
