EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah (AP) - Utah County Sheriff’s officials have identified the deputy who shot and killed a man holding a teenage girl at knifepoint.

KUTV of Salt Lake City reported (https://bit.ly/1W7zHpN) Saturday that Deputy Brett Lawrenson fatally shot 23-year-old Daniel Bennett Edwards inside the suspect’s Eagle Mountain home last week.

Police say Edwards’ wife called 911 the night of June 12 and said her husband was holding her 17-year-old niece hostage.

Deputies say they attempted negotiations but then Edwards allegedly threatened to kill the girl within 60 seconds.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon says the time-sensitive threat forced deputies to move in.

Lawrenson fired one shot.

The victim suffered minor injuries.

Lawrenson is an eight-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and a member of its SWAT team.
