SAC CITY, Iowa (AP) - Hundreds of people convened on the western Iowa town of Sac City this weekend to construct the world’s largest popcorn ball.

A ball of popcorn estimated to weigh 10,000 pounds was constructed Saturday at the Noble Popcorn plant, the Sioux City Journal reported (https://bit.ly/1Scy57m ).

Sac City first claimed the largest popcorn ball in 1995, when people came together to make one weighing in at 2,225 pounds. The enormous treat traveled all over the Midwest and to the Iowa State Fair to promote Sac County’s claim as the “Popcorn Capital.”

But in June 2004, the record was defeated, prompting Sac City residents to build another topping 3,100 pounds. Again, the record was defeated, and - again - the city went to work on a third monster popcorn ball in 2009. That one topped 5,000 pounds.

Saturday’s effort was intended to top another record-breaker set by a group at the Indiana State Fair. Sac City folks plan to submit Saturday’s effort to the keepers of the Guinness Book of World Records.

“This is my fourth and last time,” said Dan Martin, plant manager at Noble Popcorn, said Saturday. “I got here at 3:30 this morning.”

The enormous popcorn ball started with 2,300 pounds of popcorn. To hold it all together, it took an additional 4,900 pounds of sugar, plus a few thousand pounds of dry syrup mix, water and a preservative.

Lundell Plastics in nearby Odebolt, Iowa, created a 2,000-pound plastic cradle for the popcorn ball. It will now be moved to a new viewing building that’s part of the Sac City Museum complex on Main Street.
