SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A suburban Detroit school has been evacuated after smoke bombs were ignited inside a cafeteria.

Five students were arrested after police and firefighters were called Thursday to Malow Junior High School in Macomb County’s Shelby Township.

Police say smoke filled the cafeteria about 8 a.m., forcing officials to evacuate students to an area near the school’s football field.

Two spent smoke bombs — the size of soda cans — were found.

Classes resumed about an hour later for the more than 1,200 students.

No students were hurt, but a school employee was taken to a hospital after suffering smoke inhalation.

The boys arrested are expected to appear Friday in juvenile court.

Shelby Township is north of Detroit.
