PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich has hired a former federal prosecutor to investigate how the secretary of state failed to mail hundreds of thousands of voter pamphlets for last month’s special election.

Brnovich also asked Michael Morrissey to review why it took more than a week for Secretary of State Michele Reagan to reveal the mistake and whether any laws were broken. Morrissey will operate independently of Brnovich’s office.

Brnovich also sent a letter to Reagan Thursday recommending she implement several changes to make sure a similar mistake doesn’t happen in the upcoming primary or general elections. He recommends she review any reports of missing pamphlets and make public announcement when she learns any were missing.

Reagan spokesman Matt Robert says she welcomes the inquiry and will consider the recommendation.
