NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - A swinging bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway near North Myrtle Beach has been closed after the gearbox that moves the bridge broke.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation said Thursday it doesn’t know how long it will take to fix the Sea Mountain Highway bridge.

Highway officials say the bridge will be left in the open position until it can be repaired so boats can pass through.

The DOT says the bridge was built in the 1930s and renovated in 2005. It opens about 900 times a year.

The fixed four-lane state Highway 9 bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway sits several hundred yards away.
