NEW YORK (AP) - Police have arrested a man in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl in Brooklyn.

Police said Thursday that 24-year-old Taariq Stephens was arrested on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon. It wasn’t clear if he had a lawyer.

Stephens is accused of killing Shemel Mercurius on Tuesday. The Brooklyn teenager was found inside an apartment semi-conscious with multiple gunshot wounds to her body. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police say the victim had been babysitting when she was shot.
