LAFAYETTE, N.Y. (AP) - A 43-year-old central New York man is jailed after authorities say he spent hours in a tree after trying to elude police.

State police say a trooper on patrol in the Onondaga County town of Lafayette attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, but the driver fled on foot into a wooded area about 10 miles south of Syracuse. Troopers say the vehicle had been reported stolen last weekend.

A state police K-9 team spotted Frederick Farwell of Jamestown hiding up a 40-foot tree and refusing to come down. He finally climbed down around 8:15 p.m. after talking to state police negotiators for five hours.

Farwell is being held in the county jail after being charged with criminal possession of stolen property. It couldn’t be determined if he has a lawyer.
