OCRACOKE, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina highway officials are holding three meetings this month for public comment on the proposed bridge on N.C. Highway at Rodanthe on Hatteras Island.

The 2.4-mile bridge would swing into the Pamlico Sound from the south end of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and into Rodanthe.

Highway officials say the “jug handle” design minimizes impacts to the refuge and the community. It doesn’t follow the route of the existing highway.

The first meeting will be held Monday at the Ocracoke Community Center. Another meeting will be held Tuesday at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Center in Rodanthe, followed by the final one Wednesday at the Dare County Administration Building in Manteo.

All meetings will be held 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
