COTTON PLANT, Ark. (AP) - Authorities say an 11-year-old boy was shot and wounded at a home in Woodruff County.

Arkansas State Police say the shooting happened at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday at a home near Cotton Plant. State police say that preliminary witness statements indicate that a family member shot the boy after mistaking him for an intruder.

State police spokesman Bill Sadler says the family member called 911 before the shooting to report a possible intruder. Woodruff County sheriff’s deputies discovered the wounded boy near a doorway to the house.

Police say the boy was taken to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in critical condition. State police are investigating the shooting and will turn over their findings to prosecutors, who will determine whether any criminal charges will be filed.
