THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Lafourche Parish officials and sheriff’s deputies have broken ground for a new parish jail in Thibodaux.

The new jail, which will be built across from the current Lafourche Parish jai, will cost $30 million.

Sheriff Craig Webre told The Daily Comet (https://bit.ly/28J35ht) Saturday the 600-bed Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex, paid for with a 0.2 percent sales tax passed May 3, 2014, is slated to open in late 2017 or early 2018.

The current jail’s capacity is 245, but officials have said they try to stay below that number when possible by housing inmates outside the parish.
