DETROIT (AP) - A 29-year-old man has been charged with felonious assault after a Detroit police officer was shot in the hand during an arrest attempt.

The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says Donald Lee Simmons of Detroit also is charged with resisting and obstructing police causing injury, being a felon in possession of a firearm and using a firearm during a felony.

Prosecutors say two officers chased Simmons late Saturday night in northwest Detroit after seeing a gun in his waistband. One of the officers was shot while struggling with Simmons. Simmons also shot himself in the hand during the struggle.

The officer and Simmons were treated at area hospitals.

Simmons was arraigned Monday. A probable cause conference is set for June 29. A preliminary examination will be held July 5.
