NEWELL, W.Va. (AP) - Change Inc., which offers medical and social services, is looking to open its first medical office in northern Hancock County.

Chester, Newell, New Manchester and New Cumberland residents who previously had to drive to Weirton will have access to the services at the Newell satellite office, which is scheduled to open Aug. 1, the Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register reported (https://bit.ly/28J5k4E ).

Change Inc. purchased the land from Mountaineer Park Inc. in October for the new location, which will provide services such as pediatrics, family health, OB-GYN and behavior health. Dental care services will follow later.

“The need for this facility in upper Hancock County surfaced through our community needs assessment three years ago,” said CEO Judy Raveaux, “and through that assessment came a lot of planning and grant writing to make it happen.”

According to Raveaux, Newell is a “medically underserved” area that also has a high prevalence of drug abuse and drug addiction.

“We all know that the drug situation in the area is out of hand,” she said. “Having a more hands-on (presence) in the community, we truly want to address some of the concerns that have been hitting our needs assessment in the last three years.”

The office also will have applications and information on other Change Inc. programs, including weatherization, housing, domestic violence, transportation, vision, veterans support and afterschool and summer meals.

Like Change Inc.’s other locations, the Newell medical clinic will be open to anyone regardless of insurance status.

Appointments can be made by calling the main Family Medical Care number at 304-748-2828.
