SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a 41-year-old man has died and a woman is being treated after they were shot during a melee in central New York that included a police officer firing her gun.

Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler says Monday that at least four guns were used when violence broke out as hundreds of people celebrated Father’s Day late Sunday night.

He says one of the officers responding to 911 calls ran to the sound of shots and opened fire when faced with a “deadly force situation.”

Fowler identified the dead man as Gary Porter but wouldn’t say if he was armed. He said it also isn’t clear if Porter was hit by gunfire from the officer or someone else. A 31-year-old woman shot in the leg is expected to recover.
