PITTSBURGH (AP) - Police say an 8-year-old Pennsylvania boy was on a ventilator with critical head injuries after his mother’s fiance’ slammed him onto the edge of a bed for failing to clean his room.

Allegheny County police say 38-year-old Orlando Williams, of North Braddock, had been drinking Sunday before he got angry when he tripped over a laundry basket in the boy’s room and “slammed” him onto the edge of a bed Sunday night.

Police say the couple drove to a hospital Monday morning after the boy remained unresponsive.

Doctors called police because of the severity of the boy’s injuries, including a herniated brain stem.

Williams was awaiting arraignment Tuesday on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child. Court records don’t list a defense attorney.
