ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A man must spend more than 30 years in prison for the death of an Albuquerque toddler he was babysitting.

A judge sentenced 30-year-old Christopher Garcia to 34 years for child abuse due to medical neglect.

The Albuquerque Journal reports (https://bit.ly/28Ls2Oa) that Judge Cristina Jaramillo declined to follow the request of Garcia’s defense attorney for 20 years.

Garcia had been babysitting 14-month-old Isaac Arevalos with his wife when he said the child fell out of bed and lost consciousness on March 25, 2015.

Paramedics weren’t called until the child’s mother took him to his father’s home.

By then, authorities say the brain damage was so severe that the baby died within two days.

Garcia must serve 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
