NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Prosecutors say three New Jersey men have been indicted on charges they tried to rob spectators of a cockfight during which a New York woman was shot to death.

Essex County prosecutors said Monday that Samir Thomas, Kelvin Diaz and Luis Ortiz were all indicted on charges in the June 2014 incident.

Prosecutors say Thomas shot into the crowd during an attempted robbery in Newark and struck 41-year-old Maria Cruz. She died at a hospital.

Thomas and Diaz face charges including attempted robbery, felony murder and attempted burglary.

Ortiz faces charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit burglary and animal cruelty charges.

Diaz is jailed. Thomas is in custody in North Carolina. Ortiz has been released.

It wasn’t immediately known if they have attorneys.
