WACO, Texas (AP) - A Central Texas police chief will retire next month after nearly 40 years on the force.

Waco police Chief Brent Stroman on Monday announced plans to retire from the department where he’s served since 1977. City officials plan a reception to honor Stroman prior to his July 31 retirement.

Stroman joined the Waco Police Department after earning a bachelor’s degree in police administration from Sul Ross State University. He earned a master’s in public administration from Texas State University.

Stroman has served his entire law enforcement career with the Waco Police Department, where he was named chief in 2007.

Stroman says he and his wife, who recently retired from teaching, plan to stay in the Waco area.
